Kiro is Amazon's agentic AI development platform that combines an IDE and CLI with a spec-driven development methodology. Unlike traditional code editors where code is the primary artifact, Kiro inverts this model: natural language specifications become the source of truth, and code is generated as a build artifact from those specs. Users write prompts that Kiro transforms into structured requirements using EARS notation, architectural designs, and dependency-sequenced implementation tasks. Kiro's agents — powered by Amazon Bedrock — then translate specifications into working code, tests, and documentation, while continuously detecting drift between specs and implementations. The platform features event-driven Hooks that trigger automated actions on file save, PR open, or spec changes, and steering files that let teams encode project-specific conventions. Kiro intelligently routes between Claude Sonnet for complex reasoning and Amazon Nova for high-throughput generation. It integrates natively with the AWS ecosystem including CodeCatalyst, Amazon Q Developer, Bedrock, and IAM. Kiro is available as a VS Code-compatible IDE (macOS, Linux, Windows) and a CLI, with native MCP support for third-party integrations.
