Kilo Code is an open-source, model-neutral AI coding agent that runs inside VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, the command line, and the cloud, giving developers a single agent that plans, writes, refactors, debugs, and reviews code across the entire software lifecycle. Created by Kilo (a San Francisco company co-founded by Brooklyn Data founder Scott Breitenother and GitLab co-founder Sid Sijbrandij), the project forked and unified the popular Cline and Roo Code agents into one MIT-licensed platform that by 2026 has surpassed 1.5 million users and reached #1 on OpenRouter, backed by an $8 million seed round led by Cota Capital in December 2025. Unlike assistants locked to a single provider, Kilo Code connects to more than 500 models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Mistral, Meta's Llama ecosystem, and local deployments, and it charges zero markup on inference when you bring your own keys. Its five built-in modes (Ask, Architect, Code, Debug, and Orchestrator) split work by phase, while the Orchestrator coordinates parallel agents on Git worktrees for long-horizon tasks. Additional capabilities include inline autocomplete, browser automation, an MCP server marketplace, always-on cloud agents with Slack, Discord, and Telegram integration, voice commands, and Auto Model routing that balances cost against capability.
