ZCode is Z.ai's coding agent harness, described in its README as an AI coding workspace with desktop, browser and terminal interfaces. The repository holds the clients, backend services, shared UI, and the Agent CLI and runtime source. Its pnpm workspace includes an Electron desktop app (packages/desktop), a web client, an HTTP and WebSocket server with remote connections, shared React components, an agent client SDK, and the Agent CLI, TUI, runtime and tools under apps/zcode-cli. Building from source requires Git, Node.js 24.14.0 and pnpm 10.33.2, with pnpm bootstrap as the setup step. The desktop bundle command targets mac, win or linux on x64 or arm64, defaults to macOS arm64, and needs the target platform's tools for packaging and signing. The command-line distribution installs a single zcode command: with no arguments it starts the terminal UI, and zcode --web serves a browser interface, both running locally without Electron and requiring Node.js. Web mode listens on 127.0.0.1 by default and generates an access token when bound to a non-local address. For self-hosted distribution, pnpm build:zcode produces the CLI release package plus an install script to host at a download URL you supply. The bundled provider configuration lists Z.ai and BigModel GLM endpoints alongside Kimi, MiniMax, DeepSeek, Qwen, Xiaomi MiMo, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, OpenRouter and OpenCode templates, so it is not limited to GLM, and a local provider config file can override it. Extensibility comes from plugins that can contribute skills, custom commands and MCP servers (stdio, http or sse), plus lifecycle hooks that are disabled by default. The NOTICE file states that the shared agent execution adapter provides no default operating system sandbox, and the first-party code is Apache-2.0.
