OpenRig is open-source software, written in TypeScript and licensed under Apache-2.0, for building and running a persistent network of coding agents as one managed system instead of a pile of terminal sessions. A team, called a rig, is defined in YAML as a RigSpec with pods, members, edges and continuity policies, and booted with rig up, which starts tmux sessions, harnesses, startup files and readiness checks. Claude Code and Codex can run in the same rig, and the runtimes list also includes terminal nodes and Pi and Oh My Pi through RPC runners. It is built as a local Hono HTTP daemon with a CLI, a terminal UI and an MCP server on top of SQLite and tmux, so every agent runs in a tmux session you can attach to and inspect. Seats are stable role addresses such as dev-build@starter, and agents talk to each other with rig send, rig broadcast and rig chatroom. Existing Claude Code and Codex tmux sessions can be discovered and adopted, topologies can be snapshotted with rig down --snapshot and restored by name, and rigs can be shared as RigBundle archives with SHA-256 integrity. Three teams are offered as starting points: starter (a Claude Code builder and a Codex reviewer for one bounded change), factory (seven agents for sustained product work) and workshop (a lead, builder, QA and reviewer), which is a separately installed rig bundle whose agents bypass permission prompts; specialist teams such as code-review, research and pm are also built in. It installs from npm as @openrig/cli and requires Node.js 22 or 24 and tmux on macOS or Linux, with WSL2 as the supported Windows route. The README notes that setup and launch write provider hooks, workspace trust settings and tmux configuration, and advises backing up the relevant files first. The Slack integration is described as experimental, and model usage costs from the selected providers still apply.
