Octop is an open-source, self-hosted AI assistant published under TencentCloud's GitHub organization: a single Python process that serves a web dashboard, CLI, IM channel bridges (Feishu, DingTalk, QQ, Telegram, WeCom, Discord), and cron automation from one control-plane database under ~/.octop/ (SQLite WAL by default, PostgreSQL optional). Each user runs multiple independent agents, each with its own workspace, LLM provider, channel set, and cron schedule; agents can take one of 16 MBTI persona templates or a custom system prompt, and a boot-time expert library allows swapping specialists per task. Octop composes runtimes from the Harness stack -- harness-agent, harness-gateway, harness-memory, and harness-browser -- for agent execution, IM routing, workspace-scoped recall, and CDP-based Chromium automation; the README says these are still being prepared for separate open-sourcing. Other named features: a Tencent connector suite (Docs, Weibo trends, News) plus an OAuth/MCP gateway; workspace storage on local disk, Docker, PostgreSQL, or COS/S3; a document knowledge base with retrieval-augmented generation; a third-party plugin system; bidirectional ACP, where octop acp exposes an agent as a stdio server for editors like Zed while outbound runners (OpenCode, CodeBuddy, Claude Code, Codex) handle delegated coding tasks; a browser-based interactive terminal; and dashboard-driven remote desktop control of Linux, Windows, or macOS. Security items named in the README are JWT-based multi-user auth/isolation, PII redaction before data leaves a workspace, and user-editable shell-command guardrails. It installs via a curl/PowerShell script provisioning Python through uv, a PyPI package, Docker Compose, or prebuilt desktop installers. The roadmap -- a shared skill/sub-agent pool, cross-user expert sharing, browser-skill recording, an "AgentTeams" orchestrator, self-evolving skill distillation, and native PC/mobile clients -- is unchecked, described as indicative rather than shipped. The repository was created 2026-07-08; its latest release, v1.0.1 (2026-09-19), matches the PyPI version, while its README badge already shows an in-development 1.0.2b1 build.
