opencodex is a local proxy, published to npm as @bitkyc08/opencodex and driven by the ocx CLI, that sits between coding-agent front ends, OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, and Grok Build, and more than 40 model providers, translating Codex's Responses API into whatever protocol the chosen provider speaks in both directions, including streaming, tool calls, reasoning tokens, and images. Models are selected with a provider/model syntax (for example codex -m "anthropic/claude-opus-5"), and a combos feature lets several providers stand behind one virtual model id with failover or weighted round-robin. For OpenAI access, opencodex can manage a pool of ChatGPT accounts for Codex auth, tracking each account's 5-hour, weekly, and 30-day quota and routing new sessions to the least-used healthy account, while existing threads keep affinity to the account that started them; quota exhaustion, failover, exclusion, or provider 401/403/429 responses can force a rebind. The README is explicit that pooling is for routing and operational resilience only: the maintainers do not endorse using it to circumvent rate limits, and warn that Anthropic may suspend accounts that route traffic through third-party proxies, putting compliance on the user. The project documents a bounded-memory design across 36 categories of process-retained state, each under an explicit byte budget, eviction policy, or expiry sweep, inspectable via an admin-token-gated /api/system/memory endpoint. Installation covers macOS, Linux, and Windows, runs as either an always-on service or an on-demand shim, and bundles its own Bun runtime so Node 18+ is the only prerequisite. By default the proxy binds to localhost with no extra authentication; opening it beyond loopback requires a bearer token, and the proxy refuses to start without one. It also builds in a consent guardrail: an interactive ocx start may ask a human whether to star the repository, but the CLI suppresses that prompt for agent-driven runs and the API rejects agent-originated star requests outright. opencodex describes itself as independent and unaffiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, or any other provider, released under the MIT license.
